Bulgaria was introduced to the International Baccalaureate in 2003 when Zlatarski International School became the country's first authorised IB World School, and the programme has expanded steadily since then. IB schools in Bulgaria span all three programmes, from the Primary Years Programme through to the Diploma, with several institutions offering the unique advantage of dual diplomas combining IB credentials with Bulgarian national qualifications. The inquiry-based, internationally minded approach of the IB fits naturally in Sofia's multicultural expat community, where students from dozens of nationalities learn together. Families choosing an IB pathway in Bulgaria benefit from a rigorous academic framework recognised by universities worldwide, delivered in a setting that is significantly more affordable than IB schools in Western Europe.
