The school was founded in 1980 and began life in a house in San Isidro. It moved to its current site in Santiago de Surco in 1985, at which time the site was a large plot of land with no buildings or grass. The first classes were held in wooden prefabricated classrooms. Over the years permanent buildings were added, with Primary established in 1986–87 and Secondary (two storeys) in 1992–93. The Arts and Sports building was partially inaugurated in 1998, and the theatre was formally inaugurated in 2011. Hiram Bingham has always pursued an international outlook and a British connection. The founder headmistress, Elsie Eckford, was British, and this tradition has been maintained with Derek Pringle, who has been the director for more than 25 years in total. The “House” system, common to many British schools, was introduced in 1988. Isabel Massa is a founder who has served as promoter and administrator for more than 40 years, playing a key role in the school's growth and in supervising major works over the decades. Her strong ethical sense has left a lasting impression on the school's spirit. The school began as a girls' school, but from 1998 boys were admitted. The 1980 cohort consisted of 49 students; today the student body is over 600. The core priority remains very personalized attention within a family-like environment, with a maximum of 50 students per year group. The wellbeing of students remains the top priority.
