Introduction

Lycée Molière is a French international school in Rio de Janeiro, part of the AEFE network and administered by the Brazilian non‑profit SFBE. Founded in 1982, it serves about 880 students from early years through Terminale (ages 2–17). Instruction follows the French Ministry of National Education programs from preschool to the Baccalaureate, with the BFI since 2022, enabling bilingual, trilingual or quadrilingual pathways and an international‑partner project. AEFE supports teaching Portuguese as the host language alongside French, with FLE and PLE for non‑Francophone learners. The school operates on two campuses: the Pereira da Silva site for younger pupils and a newer Flamengo building for lycéens. Facilities include libraries, a theatre, modern science laboratories, a music and arts room, a pedagogical garden, a covered sports court, abundant IT resources and an on‑site restaurant run by a French chef. Extracurriculars feature a student web radio, Lièrmo newspaper, intercultural workshops, the Concordia 2025 festival, and a Book Festival.

Academics

Lycée Moliére teaches French Curriculum for students aged 2 to 17.

Curriculum

The school follows the French Ministry of National Education programs from preschool through the Baccalaureate. Throughout the schooling, AEFE provides for teaching the host language, Portuguese, on the same basis as French, in addition to the usual foreign language instruction. The cycles are Cycle 1: Ecole Maternelle; Cycle 2: Apprentissages Fondamentaux; Cycle 3: Cycle de Consolidation; and the lycée levels Seconde, Première, Terminale, with the Brazilian nomenclature shown alongside the French terms. Since 2022, the school offers the BFI (Baccalauréat Français International), replacing the OIB; the BFI preparation concerns only the terminal cycle, and the path can be bilingual, trilingual, or quadrilingual, including enhanced cultural and linguistic study and a knowledge of the world component, with an international-partner project. Language support for non-francophone students includes Français langue étrangère (FLE) and Portugais langue étrangère (PLE), with immersion and targeted courses to help students integrate into the French curriculum.

Higher Education Progression

The school has agreements with certain Brazilian private universities for admission to the first year of university. Alumni posts describe post-bac trajectories and journeys after graduating, illustrating paths taken by former students.

Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school has a Pôle Santé: Inclusion Scolaire. Exellence pour tous is a promise to provide every pupil with the resources and tools needed for their growth and academic success. Under the authority of the head of Establishment, the mission of this service is to support students with educational needs and to guide Lycée Molière toward an inclusive school with quality schooling for each pupil by recognizing their individuality. The Pôle Santé can be engaged by teachers, families, and external therapists to support students from kindergarten through the final year.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The Pôle Santé carries out numerous missions including meetings and observation of students in class, meetings and guidance for families, and educational team meetings with the family, the student and the teaching teams. It implements pedagogical accommodations prescribed by a physician or specialist, provides academic coaching, follows students and families individually, raises teachers' awareness about inclusion, and collaborates on staff training. The health unit is staffed by Elisabete Alves (specialized teacher & school coach, available daily 8:00–17:00), Carla Moreira (school psychologist, hours 8:30–16:30 Wednesdays/Thursdays/Fridays), and nurses Denise Apiaca Heringer, Janaina Iglesias (Molière 1), Rosalina De Freitas (Molière 2) with daily hours 8:00–18:00.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Parcours Langue AEFE emphasizes reinforced language learning from primary school and the promotion of multilingual education as the core of the foreign-language education project abroad, contributing to the excellence of the schools and meeting families' expectations. An AEFE brochure explains the project as part of the Parcours langue.

Mental Wellbeing

The school uses the Pôle Santé to promote inclusion and the well-being of students, providing resources and tools for their development and academic success. The service conducts classroom observations, supports meetings with families, holds educational team meetings, arranges pedagogical accommodations, offers academic coaching, and follows students and families individually. It also trains staff on inclusion and collaborates with external professionals to support student well-being.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is supported through the Pôle Santé's work to ensure inclusive schooling and protect student well-being.
